the Barn owl box Range

Another busy year has passed with a number of new comers joining us. We were able to obtain 3 more pairs of red squirrels to join our breeding colony but unfortunately the wet weather caused problems and the babies did not survive. We hope for a better season next year.

swans

We have had a number of different wildlife rescues one of the most interesting was a large cob swan He was found in the garden of a farmer who lives near the estuary where he was resident. The swan had flown into a wire on a hot day and collapsed in the garden and was then brought to us. It was our first swan and so a lot of ring round was done to make sure that the correct treatment was given. He was placed in a stall with food and water and left to rest after some interesting conversations a gentleman from the swan rescue suggested that he might have got heat stroke after his collapse and to turn a hose on him. We did this for about 10 minutes and the difference was amazing he was up and about and wanting to go home so after some sandwiches with a high protein filling he had to be caught which was no easy task as now he stood up and was getting on for 6 feet in height. He was taken back to the estuary and found his mate waiting for him a very happy reunion.

We have had a selection of other birds from doves to sea gulls some just needed a rest and some food others were youngsters that needed caring for until they were ready to fledge. Like a young buzzard who had left the nest during bad weather and was not strong enough to hunt on his own After a few weeks he had grown strong enough and was flying well so was fit for release He came back for his dinner in the evenings for a while until he was a confident hunter and still visits when he wants a free meal.

A number of rabbits that have needed a new home through no fault have of their own have to live here. All are adults that are difficult to re-home. We were fortunate to be given some hutches with runs from another wildlife rescue that we work with to allow us to do this.
We have managed to get a couple more aviaries up one large one for all the barn owls to go in and one for our Long eared owls one of which came to us with only one wing but gets around amazingly well.
We now have a large variety of birds and animals some unwanted pets that have needed a new home some injured wildlife that cannot be rereleased but are given as much freedom as possible to live out their lives with all their needs taken care of. Like Jack the Jackdaw who came to us with an injured wing unfortunately it was at the shoulder and so could not be fixed but now Jack has the freedom of the Garden and wanders about quite happily and when he has had enough he takes himself back to his cage where he can sleep away from danger.
