The box is set at an angle, it has a letterbox opening with a perch for the owl to land on and hunt from. There is an access hole at the front allowing for cleaning and checking young. It also has a perch on top of the box so the owl can hunt from the safety of the box.
The box is made from 9mm exterior grade plywood. |
The Tawny owl is native to Britain and is the most common owl in the UK.
It lives in woodland and farmland but it is sometimes found in the city, living in city parks. Mice, Rats and other small mammals are the main diet of these owls in towns, but in the woodland owls live on small rodents, birds and insects as well as mice and rats. |
The nest box should be mounted facing south to southeast to prevent wind going in to the box. The box should be mounted at least 2.5metres above ground level.
The Tawny owl is nocturnal so the best time to see them fly is at nighttime. Inside the box you can place wood chips for nest material.
At the end of each breeding season it is sensible to clean out the box with a specialist disinfectant i.e. Vicron. |
